50th Anniversary of the First Consumer Barcode Scan – Satellite Media Tour and Consumer PR Survey
June 2024 marked a significant milestone in consumer retail and supply chain management with the 50th anniversary of the first consumer barcode scan at an Ohio grocery store on 6/24/74. GS1 US partnered with 4media and Atomik Research to conduct a PR survey gathering consumer insights, including the most important product details from retail QR codes. Plus, we got to have a bit of fun in talking to consumers about the topic.
4media incorporated the new data into the SMT background messaging to highlight the past, present and future of barcode and QR code technology across consumer and business applications. The “Scanniversary” On-Location/Remote SMT generated top national and local interviews, including graphics and mentions of the survey data.
GS1 talks more in-depth about their experience working on the campaign in this AdAge article, where they mention: “We reached an earned audience of 8 million through 672 TV and 110 radio broadcasts, with features on CBS News, Cheddar TV, Scripps News, Forbes, Yahoo! Finance and Morning Brew, among others.”
Months later, the data from the Atomik-run survey is still being quoted. Just further proof that data has a shelf-life beyond a media campaign!
